Neon signs, you see them almost everywhere. For this school project we had to go 'hunting' for neon sign and make our own in a fitting setting. How I came on the final product you can find on this page.
First we got to send away. We had to find neon signs in the city. What I noticed was that there where a lot but they where not that special.
Of course I made a mood and style board. I first wanted a future city mood, but a lot of neon sign artwork are set in this kind of style. It wouldn't been unique. Then a classmate had chosen for the moon what I thought was brilliant but I didn't want to steal his idea so I want with another place where now one expected a neon sign. I came up with the pyramids in Egypt.
Then I started sketching. I started with the composition first and after that I started sketching the board.
Then I made the environment first, I made sure that there were no outlines and that you saw a lot of layers in the sand.
I am pretty glad with how it looks, this is one of the first times I used this kind of style.
I first made this board. I choose for round shapes but I wasn't very happy with the result. I went back and looked at other neon signs. Other signs make use of big lettering. A lot of lettering falls out of the lines of the board. They also make use of clean lines with sometimes a combination of round shapes. I choose to stick with the color pallet because I liked the colors.
I choose this as the final board. It has three different types of font because other neon sign use all different kind of fonts too.
I also wanted to have an old look, with the colors and shapes it looks like an 80's neon sign, but I wanted to feel like it's been in the desert since the 80's.sign, but

I thought it would have been fun to make a day setting with no lights and in the night when the lights are on. I am happy with the end result. This was the first time using this kind of style and I liked how it turned out. I am definitely using this kind of style again.
